Tech Squad

Mission
The mission of the Tech Squad at P.S. 120Q is to help students develop leadership skills while learning valuable technological skills. Members of the Tech Squad will work closely with our technology teacher to learn new skills to integrate technology into our school culture. Students will assist the technology teacher in introducing and maintaining technology in classrooms and building wide. Through building technology awareness and capacity in our students, we encourage members of the Tech Squad to develop autonomy and critical thinking skills that will enhance their academic performance.
Goals
To create a student-run group that encourages collaboration and autonomy in problem-solving and developing new initiatives.
To provide students with the ability to assist with and participate in school wide initiatives.
To incorporate Common Core State Standards for Technology Skills to encourage students to demonstrate proficiency in the use of computers and applications as well as an understanding of the concepts underlying hardware, software, and connectivity.
To develop skills in leadership and technology such as management of A/V equipment, website design and website debugging and maintenance.
To provide a forum for student expression.
To assist in solving school problems.
Tech Squads students began working on their Photography skills during our meeting! Students used iPads to take creative photos of themselves, other techies, or objects. They had a lot of fun working on photo composition and editing their photos.
The P.S. 120 Tech Squad celebrated the Computer Science Education week by completing a code.org project. Students on the squad completed their favorite project Dance Party! While the students worked on the project some of the moved to the rhythm of the songs they were working on.
This week we are sharing the Student Profile for our 5th Grade Techie Rachel! Before each student was selected to join Tech Squad, they each wrote and told us the reasons why they love tech and fixing/troubleshooting computers.
Happy Thanksgiving from the P.S. 120 Tech Squad! We hope that you have a safe and happy holiday. Enjoy the two days off from school and don’t forget to use tech during your free time. As you enjoy your holiday, use the internet to search how other people are celebrating their holiday.
One of the most important pieces of tech used in a school is the the SMART Board. This morning, the tech squad learned the basics of connecting and troubleshooting a SMART Board. Carlos, one of the supervisors of the squad, mentioned that connecting to the board is one of the most common issues in the school.

Last week’s meeting of Tech Squad, student learned how to troubleshoot a wireless printer. One of the Squad supervisors, Carlos, demonstrated how to print the network setting page from a printer. On the print out, students had to find the IP address for the printer.
This years Tech Squad includes a wide range of grades. This year the Tech Squad includes members from 3rd Grade all the way up to 5th Grade. Another change for this year is that Mr. Balvin and Carlos will be leading the Tech Squad!
